Santuario del Cobre
The sanctuary of Our Virgin of Charity of El Cobre, the Patron Saint of Cuba is located only 18 Km away from the center of Santiago de Cuba, in a mining town founded in 1830 called El Cobre. The basilica was built on the summit of a small hill and the statue of the virgin stands in a central niche. There are also showcases that exhibit the offerings of worshippers, including the literary Nobel Prize awarded to writer Ernest Hemingway in 1954. His Holiness Pope John Paul II crowned Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre in 1998, during his trip to Cuba.
